I don't care who's a good boy—back away from the baby, bud

When it comes to babies, dogs are quite protective [lots of barking]. Cats (with notable exceptions) are more about the snuggles [h/t Miss Cellania].

The first study to actually count the number of cortical neurons in the brains of a number of carnivores, including cats and dogs, has found that dogs possess significantly more of them than cats. […] The results of the study are described in a paper titled “Dogs have the most neurons, though not the largest brain: Trade-off between body mass and number of neurons in the cerebral cortex of large carnivoran species” accepted for publication in the open access journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy.

Poodles Are Much More Than a Haircut

A very old breed, indeed, poodles are and were everywhere and did every thing. As you can see by the links in this first section, they are not just prancing dogs in funny haircuts, they were working dogs. They were considered for use during WW II war dogs, though they turned out not to be ideal. They've raced in Alaska sled dogs and did fairly well. And they're being retrained for what their history suggests is their most suitable job water dogs

We hope you’ll be happy

An animal rescue group feeding stray cats in South Korea noticed one who was a little different. She eagerly took cat food that was packaged, but tended to leave loose food alone. When presented with a choice of wrapped or unwrapped food, she selected the wrapped food and took off. [h/t Miss Cellania] [more inside]

Manipulative bastard, your name is C?a?t? Dog

Dogs really do turn on the puppy eyes when humans look at them, according to researchers studying canine facial expressions. Scientists have discovered that dogs produce more facial movements when a human is paying attention to them – including raising their eyebrows, making their eyes appear bigger – than when they are being ignored or presented with a tasty morsel (study).

What can brown and furry do for you?

Sean McCarren has been working for UPS for 17 years now and is a proud "driver of the big brown truck," he told BuzzFeed News. One of the greatest perks of his job, he said, is the dogs he meets on his routes. "I wish we could just hang out with the families and their dogs all day, but it's just not feasible," McCarren said. He explained that he and other UPS drivers will often take their work breaks to play with these dogs who run up to their trucks or greet them when they come to people's front doors. Five years ago, McCarren was inspired to start a Facebook group — a community of sorts — for him and other UPS drivers to share photos and videos of their pup friends. He named it UPS Dogs. Dearest Woody Woodstock Yamaduki Hardy from Peachtree Georgia

Never forget that night. It was wonderful. One minute he was almost dead next terrified. Then picked up by strangers then after He had a power nap in the car, the next he’s walking with his bandy leg John Wayne strut under the strip lighted aisles of this massive pet store happy and playful. He wore a red bandana that night and from then on and drank religiously from the toilet throughout the night despite having a few bowls of water in the apartment he was every inch a survivor.

If You Love the Wilderness, Keep Your Dog Out of It

An interview with backpacking guide Marjorie "Slim" Woodruff on the costs of egocentrism in the backcountry:
Education only works if people are open to change. I think hikers have to undergo a personal epiphany which changes their paradigm. Dog owners are so emotionally caught up in their animal, it is difficult to convince them to change.

There's No Such Thing as a Good Dog

Wes Siler, Outside magazine's lifestyle columnist, writes about what it takes to be a good owner:
People love to tell me how lucky I am to have a good dog like Wiley. But they’re dead wrong—there was no luck involved. Wiley’s good behavior and good temperament are products of four years of hard work, nothing else. The more people who understand this, the more people there will be who have "good" dogs too.

The Cult of Guinefort: An Unusual Saint
In the provinces...the method for making someone a saint was more flexible with room for local input and influence. In this environment, someone could be “sainted” without really meeting the necessary qualifications of the central church. One illustration of such a case is that of the thirteenth-century Saint Guinefort who, as it happens, was a greyhound.

Vet Ranch is a YouTube Channel created by Dr. Matt Carriker in 2014. Our goal is to spread awareness of the many homeless animals in need of medical attention. It all started when he received an after hours call to euthanize a stray dog that had been hit by a car. After picking up the dying pup from a dark road and taking it to the clinic, Dr. Matt saw a glimmer of life in her eyes and made the decision to try to save her rather than euthanizing. He pulled out his trusty iphone and began to film the process of bringing the sweet black lab back to life [graphic injuries].

"He's not my best friend. He's my brother."

Corporal Jeff DeYoung (Ret.) & Military Working Dog Cena served together in the United States Marine Corps during one tour of duty from October 2009 to April 2010 as part of Operation Moshtarak. Cena served a total of four years in the military, and was separated from Corporal DeYoung for four years, one month, and eight days. They had a tearful reunion on June 5, 2014 with help from American Humane. On July 26, 2017, as friends and fellow patriots saluted, DeYoung carried Cena past a crowd of well-wishers and boarded a decommissioned Navy ship in Muskegon, Mich. It was there where the black lab, lame with bone cancer, was euthanized. He was 10.
